Ahh the Big East or maybe after last season the "Big Easy". The bottom line is this, West Virginia was a severe dissapointment last year starting with a loss to ECU and a far cry from national title material that people thouht they would be. With a QB like Pat White and RB like Steve Slaton why not. So now that they're gone now what. Well they have a capable guy at QB in Jarrret Brown, is he a Pat White absolutely not but can he win games......yes. The question is where does this first year starter's help come from? The D needs to be able to hold opponents to 10 points or less some games in order to win because this offence is not matured yet. Thier out of confrencce schedule is not hard but is respectable with opponents like ECU and Auburn but outside of that they play Liberty, Colorado and Marshall. The toughest in confrence test is a trip to South Florida where an up and comming team is looking for thier first major breakthrough with a big east title. And given a coach in Billy Donavan and a guy like Grothe at QB we could be looking at a dangerous team. As for the defending champs, Cincinatti better have enjoyed last yea because they lost to much talent to be repeating champs and another BCS bowl birth. Are they a good team yes but South Florida and West Virginia are that much better. So with that being said here is my team grades and predictions.
Cincinatti- C+ comming of a great year last season the Bearcats have lost key players and are now a step below where they were a year ago. Look for them to win some big games but with dates against Illinois, at Oregon State, at South Florida, and West Virginia I think it is too much to ask of such a young team to repeat as Big East Champs.
UConn- C- UConn isn't bein talked about much but then again should they be? Also a team that surprised some a year ago but is clearly looking for consistency. This young team will see what they are made of when North Carolina comes to town before the confrence season begins. Bottom line: to many holes to be contenders
Louisville- C+ a team with a bunch of potential and surprising capability but can they hold up for 12 games. But with early season games against Kentucky and Utah they can get noticed and could sneak up on everybody just like Cincy from a year ago.
Pittsburgh- C can this squad ever amount to a consistant contender. Thats a question that can partially be answered this season as they got a good coach they just need execution on a consistant basis. Wanstead knows how to coach big games just ask West Va 2 yrs ago but can his players play at that level every week......we may never know.
Rutgers- C-: u get the feeling that they are on a spiral to where they were 10 yrs ago.......the land of mediocrity. They need a player to make a spark to contend.
South Florida- B: good coach check, good feild general check, big east title.........this is arguably the best shot at it USF has ever had. Grothe is a proven QB with experience and ability and West Virginia has no Pat White. The door is open for a title to be found in south florida and if they beat miami can claim to the best team in southern florida and the Big East. They can compete with ANYBODY when they're clickin
Syracuse- D: Yup the current laughing stock of the Big East they are terrible getting worse and the tunnel is pitch black.
West Virginia B-: Contenders absolutely but I dont think they have the fire power to beat USF especially away from Morgantown. West Va will have a tough road to be Big East Champs but it is possible
Favorite: South Florida
Bad news bears: Syracuse
Sleeper: Pittsburgh
MVP: Matt Grothe
