PGA Championship Preview
Well the PGA Championship is advertised as "Glory's last shot" and in a way in 2009 that promo is more true than ever. Why because the best player in the world is searching 4 his 1st major of 09 and this is his last shot to get one. Good news for Tiger....he won the previous two tournaments.......bad news he wont be satisfied unless he gets a 3rd win in a row and the feild as in any major is loaded. Sergio is starting to play well again, Phil still has to be reconed with regardless of his personal issues over this summer, he's still Phill which means anything can happen. But before we get too far lets not forget the 3 major champs from this year so far. Angel Cabrara is a superb driver of the golf ball which will be almost essential at Hazeltine in order to have good birdie opportunities. Lucas Glover is consistant with his ball striking but the putter needs to perform as it did at Bethpage to repeat his US Open success. And the final but most recent major champ, Stewart Cink is playing well and is among the favorites to stop Tiger from gaining a major in '09. If someone asked me so who's your sleeper to be in contention this week.......I'd respond with a few names but my top sleeper this week is Freddy Couples. Why......He has the length to compete with the young guns but he is also one of the most accurate strikers of the golf ball you will find anywhere. Not only that experience is on his side and he could show some old glory of his own. Other names on that list would be John Daly, Rory McIlroy and Brandt Snedeker. All of which have something in common.........the putter is their success or downfall. Although McIlroy has had driving issues in the majors and quite frankly has'nt played that well. But all that aside he has the talent to contend but if he does I'm not sure his nerves could handle it. Daly we know hits it a mile but can he find fairways and do what he did to win his first PGA by hitting great iron shots and stellar short game. Snedeker has contended in the Masters and can do so here as well because he is a ball striker and now has some experience. Jim Furyk also is among front runners this week as he should be in any major till he stops being so consistant. With that said I think Tiger will finish out the major 09 season with a bang and who knows he may battle Paddy down the stretch again. Besides last time Woods missed a cut in a major he won the next 7 events he played in.....this would be #3 if he can pull it off. One thing is for sure.......I'm not betting against him and you can sleep on that one. -Kyle
