What better way to kick off the last full month of summer than college football. Today we start a week preview of everything college football. From predictions, to coaching changes, to ever developing storylines.
The Western Athletic Conference. Lets start off with a number 6, the number of teams in the conference performing at .500 or better, 5 the number of teams who participated in bowl games last year, 4 the number of teams returning at least 75% of their starters, 3 teams recieving votes in this years pre season polls, 2 BCS bowl games, 1 BCS bowl game win. So thats the conference by the numbers, well lets change it up. So clearly the favorite to win the conference is Boise State, who even after a disappointing loss to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl, still continues to impress; in both skill and attitude. They finished 12-0 last year in the regular season and a perfect 13 and 0 was spoiled not by a blow out or an underdog, but by a TCU team with a stacked Defense and nothing to lose. Someone asked me who I thought could have a perfect season this year, in any conference and I said Boise State, hands down, theyve proven they can beat the big time teams and trounce the little ones. Their coach has instilled in his players a humility, and confidence almost unmatched by any other school. Just say his recruiting pipelines out loud and try not to laugh. I mean who wouldnt want thos Blue chip producing states like North and South Dakota or maybe even Montana and Wyoming. Theyre more fit to shirt Wilderness or Cowboy movies, than produce great football players. Yet somehow Coach Peterson seems to mold them into not only good solid football players, but even better young men. How many times have you ever heard of a cheating scandal (Florida State) Drug busts(Miami, Penn State, LSU) Recruiting violations and players getting salaries (USC, Ohio State) or firing your coach mid season (Clemson) These young men ar egreat people, intelligent and humble. And how about Ian Johnson, who was more excited about proposing to the love of his life, than he was about beating Oklahoma ex. 2004 Fiesta Bowl. Look for the Broncos to surprise alot of people yet again behind the arm of Kellen Moore and the leadership of Coach Pete. And who knows as long as Ian Johnson was around he might get another 5 yrs of eligibility.Either way look Boise to finish with 10+ wins and I would not be suprised to see them undefeated, yet again. So Boise is the pride of the conference, but lets not forget about the other guys. First, Fresno St, that mentality, any time any place anybody, is hard to match. They are tricky and love playing as the underdog, look for them to be second in conference and finish with 8+ wins. Hawaii, bowl game to be expected (I mean geez its named after 'em) 7 wins and another 3000 yard passer this roster is loaded with home grown freshman and some great program tradition. Who doesnt like 85 degrees and sun as they play, watch or coach football. You can even feel it through you TV sets. Louisiana Tech, Nevada, and mayb Idaho should prob finish bowl eligible and put on some very fun offensive shows on your local sports channel. - Nick (R.I.P. Jason (Gunner) Hunter, you served your country well.)
